Learning Environments
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
My artifacts demonstrating this standard
Name of Artifact: Response to Observation #1
Date: January 31, 2012
Course: EDUC 101 Introduction to Teaching
Brief Description: Personal observations made while sitting in on an elementary class.
Rationale: I am including this classroom observation response because it reflects my understanding of the learning environment. This observation shows that I am very aware of the types of spaces that encourage student growth and the need for organization in the classroom. I also understand that the physical setting is not the only make-up of a learning environment. I understand that the teacher sets the environment for all her learners by the way she interacts, compensates, and manages classroom behaviors.

Reflection
For my Introduction to Elementary Education class, I was assigned to observe a local 3rd grade class as they went through their day. I was asked by my professor to focus on the classroom environment in terms of usage of space and equipment, classroom organization for instruction, the classroom management plan, and the classroom routines. I was very detailed in my observation report and found that I was very impressed with the school that I had the opportunity to observe in. The staff, from the secretary to the principal, was very welcoming and engaging. The
teacher I was assigned to was a fantastic educator. I was thoroughly impressed by her amazing commitment to her students. It is my hope that I will work in a school in which the learning environment tone is set the minute you walk in the door and spread throughout the school all day long. I enjoy being around so many people, from the students to the staff, who all appreciate and value education. I know that wherever I end up teaching, it is my responsibility to set the tone and environment in my
classroom keeping in line with the best practices for children.

Name of Artifact: "Frankenstein" Lab
Date: October 31, 2012
Course: EDUC 224 Introduction to Scientific Inquiry
Brief Description: In this assignment for my Introduction to Scientific Inquiry class, I created and taught to my peers a lab experience that coincides with the Common Core Standards for 6th grade science.
Rationale: I included this lab design assignment from my Introduction to Scientific Inquiry class to represent my ability to create a learning environment that supports active engagement in learning.
Reflection
Investigations are a big part of
Science in today’s classroom. One of the projects I did while taking a course
on scientific inquiry was creating a science lab that I could use to teach a
science standard in an elementary classroom, and then present the lab to my
peers. As my presentation fell on Halloween, I chose to find a theme
appropriate science experiment for a 6th grade science class learning about the
states of matter. For our experiment, we used our measuring skills to create a
mixture of baking soda and vinegar in a plastic cup topped with a rubber glove.
The acetic acid in the vinegar reacts to the sodium bicarbonate (a base) in the
baking soda and releases carbon dioxide which inflates the glove. I practiced
the experiment at home with my kids before I presented it to my peers, and the kids,
as well as the adults enjoyed the lab while learning some very interesting
science. I included pre-experiment vocabulary and post experiment questions for
students to record in their science notebooks. I also provided a worksheet on
the states of matter for a follow-up activity/ homework assignment. I feel as I
teach my class, the students will learn a tremendous amount by working collaboratively.
I will use this lab in the future, not only because of the social interaction within
the groups, but also because it is a venue for self-motivation and active
learning.
