Reflection
While taking a course called Using Computers in Education, one of my assignments was to create a PowerPoint presentation discussing the social, ethical, and legal issues involved with technology in education. This project not only gave me the opportunity to explore the process of creating a PowerPoint lesson, but also taught me about the many issues surrounding technology in the classroom. Some of the modern
technologies that have recently been entering the classroom settings are
fantastic tools with which educators can expand their lessons like never before. Yet, there are technologies, such as the social media sites, that create issues in the school setting even though these cannot be accessed from school. With the good, so comes the bad. I know that one has to be very vigilant about the classroom rules regarding technology. These rules are established to protect the students’ identities, as well as their psychological well-being. I am excited about the endless possibilities that technology can provide for educators to organize, plan, collaborate, and teach. And yet I know it also provides negative opportunities for the youth.

Reflection
For my Using Computers in Education class, I was required to keep up with a regular blog, journaling my responses to the week’s lessons and projects. When I began this course, I was very much a novice, using my laptop for writing papers and retrieving emails. I can now say that not
only am I familiar with many useful programs, but I am also the “go-to girl”
when it comes to technology at the elementary school where I work. Technology doesn’t only enhance the education for the mainstreamed population, but also for the visual learners. It can provide differentiation in the classroom, such as creating more challenging lessons for the accelerated learners. One of the most inspirational uses of technology in the school setting is when it is used for the physically handicapped. There are students who can do so much more now than they ever could before. Now a non-verbal child can communicate with her peers and go to class among the mainstreamed population. A hearing-disabled child can sit anywhere in his classroom and still hear his teacher’s lectures through the
use of the tiny hearing aid in his ear that is linked to the tiny microphone on the teacher’s lapel. Technology in the classroom has quickly become an invaluable tool for educators. I will continue to keep abreast on the latest advancements in educational technology as a teacher. It is absolutely worth teaching “dogs” of any age “new tricks.”
